- The base of the hat is made from black woven straw, decorated with purple feather trim and taffeta fabric
- The wide, flat brim is encircled with a lavish trim of purple ostrich feathers, with additional feathers and a taffeta bow placed asymmetrically on one side, adding height and movement - an important Edwardian design feature. Such hats were worn for garden parties, daytime outings and summer promenades
